RETIREMENT GLIMPSES (continued from page 5)

WALT ROMANOW - COMM STUDIES/ The west's blue skies vs our milder climate? Walt says the skies have it!

All's well with Yvonna and me in Edmonton. We've taken to the community very readily - particularly since our four children and their families have settled here. But we're often reminded that we left behind some dear and close friends when we left Windsor. The Retirees' Newsletter, in a way, helps us to keep in touch with some of those friends. We're both managing to keep busy. The building we're in is fully equipped with workout areas, so we both manage to eat healthily without putting on weight. I've met a couple of partners with whom I play tennis (indoor) regularly...Jake Soderlund and I are working on a couple of papers for the Learneds in Montreal (an SSHRC-supported study). But, perhaps Jake will retire soon! While the temperature may drop, this is always made up for by the big, blue, bright, beautiful sky. And, as one of my grandchildren reminded me, "You're retired. When it's cold, don't go out". So, I listen to him.

JOHN P. O'MEARA, C.S.B. - HISTORY / Really enjoying retirement...How can you lose?

At midnight August 31st, 1979, I earned the right to add to my name that famous abbreviation "Ret.". Thank God. It has been wonderful ever since. True, there have been a few part-time jobs: seven years helping a pastor in La Salle; two years as financial officer at Assumption University; a few board assignments. Throw in a few operations and a lot of fun and it has all been worth-while. How can you lose? The pressure is off... Thanks to the Association for watching over our interests and for providing an interesting Newsletter.

JOAN MAGEE - LEDDY LIBRARY / Combining research, travel and two favourite hobbies

Since retiring on August 31, 1993, I have been enjoying my new-found leisure immensely, finding time for two favourite hobbies: bird watching and gardening. I also continue to combine research with travel. In the fall of 1994 I spent some weeks in Switzerland collecting material for a new book and enjoying the mountains. I just returned from three weeks of admiring spring flowers in Holland, and carrying out archival research. This fall Netherlandic Press, of which I am publisher, will be celebrating the release of its 40th book, Flora and Fauna, by the prize-winning Ottawa poet Diana Brebner
