Course Overview

What is the mind?  Is it purely material or natural?  Is there something supernatural about it?  How is consciousness to be understood?   What is free will?  Could a machine ever think?  Could a machine ever be conscious?  Could a machine ever have free will?  How do the answers to the preceding questions affect how we think of ourselves as persons?  Is it possible to "build" an artificial person?  Contemporary approaches to the preceding and other questions will be examined.

The prerequisite for the course is one second year (or higher-level) course in philosophy, or permission of the instructor.  No background in psychology or computer science is presupposed.

Texts

All assigned readings can be found in the Course Pack, available at Document Services (in the basement of Chrysler Hall Tower, CHT 01).
