Overview

What makes an action morally right?  What makes a person morally good?  Under what circumstances should something be made illegal?  What is the relationship between law and morality?  Are they the same or different?  If they are different, how are they different, and what are their similarities? How do our notions of liberty and equality influence how we make moral and legal judgments?  What sort of punishment can be morally justified?  What sort of punishment can be legally justified?  Are our existing practices of punishment justifiable?  If so, why?  If not, why not?  These are some, but not all, the questions we will be dealing with in this course.

The two tests and the final exam will be based both on the assigned readings and on class lectures.  Attending regularly is essential for students wishing to do well.
