What is the mind?  To what extent can it be understood computationally?  These are the main questions of this course.

After a brief introduction to the arguments that lead to the development of functionalism and its computational variants, we will engage in a close study of Jerry Fodor's The Mind Doesn't Work that Way.  Selections from Boden, Copeland, Dennett, Haugeland, Smolensky and others will be included in a course pack.  Materials from the course pack will be used to initiate assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of Fodor's position as well as explore more general issues pertaining to the assessment of computationally modeling cognition.

Previous exposure to the above thinkers is not required.  The course is suitable for those doing graduate work outside of Philosophy, but all students will be expected to engage the assigned texts philosophically.
