Course Overview

This course examines the implications of artificial intelligence and cognitive modeling research for issues in the philosophy of mind and epistemology.

What is the nature of mental states?  Should thinking be thought of as largely linguistic?  How else might we think of mental states?  How might changing the way we think of mental states change the way we think about reasoning and knowing?  To what extent, if any, should the linguistic turn in philosophy be rethought? These are some of the questions that will be examined in this course.

No specific background in science is required, but an introductory-level course in psychology or computer science is recommended.  Prerequisite: at least one 200-level Philosophy course, or consent of the instructor.
