Emu ranching is currently one of the fastest growing agribusinesses in North America. Emu are almost totally usable and offer a high rate of return on investment. They are tough, hardy birds that adapt well to most climates and conditions.

Emus are the second largest flightless bird in the world. They are native to the deserts and woodlands of Australia. Emus stand about 5 1/2 feet high and weigh about 120-150 pounds as adults. Emus run at speeds of up to 30 MPH, defend themselves by kicking, and swim well. Emus are long legged heavy bodied birds that grow very rapidly, with wings that are very small. Emus tend to be friendly and so curious that they will even follow you around. The hair like plumage of both- sexes form a mop like tail. Emu necks are long and flexible covered with skin that has a bluish tone. Emus pair up for a 4-6 month breeding season, during this time, couples wander together in search of leaves, fruits, seeds, and insects, food to fatten up the male. The emu needs this extra fat, because he'll soon be sitting for 2 months without food while he incubates the eggs laid or about 54 days, each egg weighing about 1.5 lb. Emu chicks hatch and begin to follow the parents around foraging for food themselves within a few days.  For more information on the incubation and hatching process CLICK HERE.   Emu chicks physically mature around 1 year of age. They will fill out some after this time and will sexually mature between 18 months and 3 years of age.  Emus tend to flock together when not in breeding season. Emus belong to the family of birds called Ratites. Webster defines a Ratite as a "Large flightless bird with a flat breast bone." This includes Emu, Ostrich, Rhea, Cassowary, and Kiwi.

After reading all this you still may be asking yourself- What is an Emu?

Well, it is a prehistoric bird thought to have roamed the outback of Australia some 80 million years ago. Much like the Native Americans relationship with the Bison, the Aborigines of Australia looked upon the emu as the core of their existence. It provided them with food, clothing, shelter, medicine and spiritual subsistence. For thousands of years the Aborigines have used emu oil in the treatment of muscle aches, sore joints, inflammation and swelling. Today this substance can and will be found in places from the family medicine cabinet to the sports training room. Today the Emu of the "Timeless" past is on the forefront of playing a large role in the future of American and Canadian agriculture.

Long known for it's healing and penetrating properties, it is well suited for use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals and has a very high purity composition. This pure nature of this versatile product is extremely important in the quality control of cosmetic products that require low irritability factors. Because of the primitive nature of the product there is ongoing university and private research currently underway to fully determine the benefits and applications. The following quote is from Mark Potter, a chemist at Atlantis Laboratories; "There are good reasons on why it heals so well, and it's because of it's chemistry. There are things in the oil that the skin needs to help heal itself. And those elements are present, and they can actually penetrate very well. That's the reason. It's actually what the skin wants and needs." If you want to know how more about emu oil and how it can help you CLICK HERE!
