Morphology "Brachyarcus thiophilus"
CELLULAR
Staining The Gram reaction has not been reported.
Morphology Rod-shaped cells bent like a bow, 1.0 x 1.5 wide and to 2.5 um long, colourless, usually with several cylindrical gas vesicles which may appear reddish if viewed with a phase-contrast microscope
Motility Non-motile
Specialized structures The cells may occasionally contain some minute sulfur granules. Cells are arranged in groups (coenobia) as a result of polar growth and median cross-division combined with tight attachment to a surface by means of a mucoid substance. Occasionally cells are merely embedded in the polymer and are thus free floating as a flat coenobium. After division, cells form coenobia of two (rings) or four (clover-leaf appearance) or more cells. Delayed cell division results in the formation of pretzel-shaped cells. Division in the coenobia may or may not be synchronous. Coenobia of 2-10 cells may measure 3-6 um in diameter; secondary families of irregularly humped agglomerates of up to 100 um or more in size can be found. Often the mucoid capsule is thin and not distinctly delineated...
