Subset |
Morphology | Intrasporangium calvum |
CELLULAR |
Staining | Gram-positive. Non-acid fast. |
Morphology | Branching mycelium, about 1.0 um in diameter, has a tendency to break into fragments of various size and shape. Aerial mycelium never observed. Oval- and lemon-shaped vesicles (5-15 um in diameter) are formed intercalary and/or at the hyphal spices.. When released onto fresh medium the sporelike cells will germinate, giving rise to a branching mycelium |
Motility | In some of the vesicles in the older cultures one might distinguish up to several round or oval bodies (1.2-1.5 um in diameter). These are nonmotile, but may undergo a brownian movement within the mature vesicles non motile |

Growth Parameters | Intrasporangium calvum |
PHYSIOLOGICAL |
Tropism | Chemoorganotrophic |
Oxygen | Aerobic oxidative catabolism |
pH | |
Temperature | Grow best at 28-37`C, no growth at 45`C |
Requirements | Prefer complex media, especially containing peptone and meat extract. No growth on the majority of mineral synthetic media routinely employed for actinomycetes |
Products | |
Enzymes | catalase positive |
Unique features | Cell wall chemo-type I (L-diaminopimelic acid (DAP), glycine). Peptidoglycan of the u-DAP-Gly type. Phospholipids of the PIV type (diagnostic of this is an unknown glucosamine-containing phospholipid). Among cell fatty acids, straight-chain saturated and unsaturated predominate. Menaquinones of the MK-8 type. |
