2006 Ornithology Class Trip to Point Pelee and Holiday Beach

On October 14, 2006, sixty-five students of Ornithology from the University of Windsor took a day-long field trip to Point Pelee and Holiday Beach. It was a cold and windy morning, but the birdwatchers could not be deterred: despite the chilly temperatures we had an excellent day of birding. Our morning started at Point Pelee National Park, where we observed mergansers, gulls, hawks, cormorants, and warblers. We then moved to Holiday Beach to watch migrating raptors from the Holiday Beach hawk tower, observing hundreds of passing Turkey Vultures and many Sharp-shinned Hawks. Bob Hall Brooks, the president of the Holiday Beach Migration Observatory, even pointed out a Peregrine Falcon. Phil Roberts and the bird banding team at Holiday Beach lead a very informative demonstration of passerine and hawk banding. We finished the day with a total of 58 species of birds seen and a fantastic ornithological adventure.
