Point Pelee and Holiday Beach Trip Photos

On October 1, students of Ornithology from the University of Windsor participated in a day-long field trip to Point Pelee and Holiday Beach to study avian migration and the fall behaviour of birds. Our morning started at Point Pelee National Park, where we observed gulls, hawks, eagles, cormorants, wrens, chickadees, woodpeckers, goldfinches, and thousands of migrating blue jays. We then moved to Holiday Beach, counting hawks from the impressive hawk tower, observing herons, egrets, and other birds in the marsh below, and watching thousands more migrating blue jays and many migrating sharp-shinned hawks. Phil Roberts and the bird banding team at Holiday Beach lead a very informative demonstration of passerine and hawk banding. We finished the day with a total of 38 species of birds seen and an excellent ornithological adventure.

Dan Mennill and the students of the 2005 Ornithology class send a very big "thank-you" to the staff of Point Pelee National Park and the Holiday Beach Conservation Area.  We owe a special thanks to Phil Roberts, Bob Hall-Brooks, Bob Pettit, and all of the bird banders and bird counters at Holiday Beach for sharing their knowledge and expertise with us!  More about bird monitoring at Holiday Beach and other local bird watching activities can be found at the Essex Region Conservation Authority webpage: http://www.erca.org/.
