BCN has been officially granted program status. The 2004 graduates were the first to receive a degree in Behaviour, Cognition and Neuroscience. Many thanks to our tireless faculty members for their faith in the program and their desire to make it officially recognized.

Having formal program status in BCN is quite beneficial. As it is right now, there are 12 professors associated with BCN with the newest members being Dr. Carlin Miller and Dr. Chris Abaere. The BCN team is comprised of faculty members from the Psychology, Biology and Chemistry & Biochemistry departments. Each faculty member has their own commitments to their respective departments in addition to their involvement with BCN. Formal degree status paves the way for future growth in the program, opening the door for further professor recruitment or for a program coordinator. More immediately, it allows for the degree name to be placed on students' diplomas. In the past, students graduated with a degree in biology and psychology. Formal degree status also created an official description of the program, highlighting the faculty's goals for the program and, the university, by granting official status, has recognized and agreed with the faculty's desires.

In addition to this, the process of making BCN a formal degree has allowed for students to express their thoughts and opinions on the program. A key desire of the students was to maintain the low student to faculty ratio, currently at approximately 5:1, as this element of our program allows for excellent laboratory experience opportunities and creates a close-knit atmosphere between professors and students truly unique at the university.

Acknowledgments

The BCNSA was ratified by the University of Windsor Students' Alliance (UWSA) on January 29, 2004. But, before that day, there were some people who are not part of the BCNSA who gave me some much needed advice and encouragement. Thank you!
