says educationprofessor FinneyCherian. He joinedhistory
professor Robert Nelson as recipients of theAlumni Award
forDistinguishedContributions toUniversityTeaching
during celebrations of theUniversity’s 101st Convocation
held June 11 to 13.
“Iwantmy students tobe passionate seekers of
knowledge rather than content proprietors of it,”Dr.
Cherian says. “Iwant them tohavemore questions inhand
than answers.”
In conferring the award at spring convocation, Alumni
AssociationpresidentMikeBates saidCherian is known for
his dedication tohis students andhis discipline.
“He is known toprovide an environment for learning
that is student-centred, with a teaching style that is
dynamic and insightful,”Bates said.
Dr. Nelsonwonpraise fromhis nominators for his
excellent relationshipwith students.
“Hiswelcoming and enthusiastic demeanour sets him
apart fromhis colleagues,”wrote one nominator. “If tobe
truly an extraordinary teacher youmust have something
special, somethingpersonal, something awee bit extra,
thenDr. Nelson eminentlyqualifies.”
The awards recognize excellence in all areas of
teaching, including classroompresentation, curriculum
development, versatility, teachingmethods, and student
support.
GeorgePantelimonBASc ’13, M.A.ScCandidate,
Electrical andComputerEngineering,was the recipient
of theBristowFamilyScholarshipestablishedbyWayne
andPuritaBristow in2007.George’s research involves
designing technology thatwill placewindsensorsonflying
drones, sending live information towind farms tooptimize
theefficiencyof their turbines, bychanging thedirection
andangle they face.
Scholarshipsupport at all levelsprovidesessential aid
