Monday, October 19, 1998 Laser printing and print queues lp & lp2

Effective today, the "laserprt" command in now available to send your
output to the laser printer in the basement lab of the University Computer
Centre. For example

laserprt FILENAME

will send a file named FILENAME to the laser printer queue. As with the PCs,
your card is required to print the job. However, you should enter your SGI
userid instead of the PC location when prompted for a userid.
Effective today, print queues lp (UNIX default queue) and lp2 have been
routed to this laser printer queue. IT Services recommends that you use
the "laserprt" command to send jobs to laser printer instead of directly
accessing these queues using the "lpr" command.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday, September 16, 1998 Reducing Paper Wastage

This semester, IT Services is introducing a new printing procedure in the
lab located in the basement of the University Computer Centre building. This
procedure is designed to reduce wastage of printer paper and to improve the
quality of printing. The 24 pages per minute laser printers will significantly
decrease the printing delays. Students will see a major improvement.

To cover the cost of the equipment and the consumables such as paper and
print cartridges, there will be a charge for printing. A "cash card" based
system will be used for charging. The rate is established on the "cost
recovery" basis. Compared to other universities and community colleges who
have been charging, our rate of 7 cents per page is one of the lowest. The
rates range from 7 cents to 10 cents and most of them are 8 or 9 cents. Signs
will be posted in the lab with details.

Thursday, Feb 12, 1998 Unsolicited Electronic Mail (junk mail)

Computing Services realizes that unsolicited electronic mail (junk mail)
can be an unwanted intrusion into your life, however, responding to these
email messages does NOT work. It only creates extra load on our systems,
our network and the internet. Instead, Computing Services asks that you
simply delete these unsolicited electronic mail messages.
In the long term Computing Services has established a committee to
address the junk mail issue. Thank-you for your cooperation.

For users getting mail on server(Challenge XL) an automated
program will be run daily from August 13, 1997 to enforce
controls on in-boxes on server. For more details see
- June's 1997 Insight,

Friday, September 13, 1996 (Updated: Friday, September 10 , 1999)

As announced last semester there is a software bug with "irc" that causes
the system to crash. When the system crashes all users are forced off as the
system restarts (reboots) itself. As you can imagine this is inconvenient to
everyone. As a result, Computing Services has found it necessary to disallow
the use of "irc" on the SGI Challenge XL (node server). Instead we encourage
irc users to use irc on node socr. This computer is administered by the
student group called SOCR. The instructions to access SOCR's IRC service are
available using a WEB browser (netscape) at
  http://socr.uwindsor.ca/homepage/irc.html
We appreciate your co-operation in not running "irc" on node server.

CUSTOMERS GOING OFF-CAMPUS: Recently we added an additional ethernet
interface to service off-campus traffic. Customers both on and off campus
can continue to connect to the SGI Challenge XL using the name
server.uwindsor.ca. Some customers going off-campus to connect to secure
remote sites may need to inform the remote site that the off-campus
address of this system has changed from server.uwindsor.ca (137.207.32.2)
to server.campus.uwindsor.ca (137.207.92.12).

Wednesday February 28, 1996 (Updated: Feb. 29 1996) Size Limits on printers

  Only files less than 120,000 characters(Approximately 10 - 15 pages) should
be sent to lp and lp2. If large files are sent to these printers only part of
the file will be printed and you will get the following lpr message
"copy file is too large" . To print large files use "PRINT " or "lpr -Pstd "
and collect your printout at the Service Counter.

Improper or wasteful use of system resources can have detrimental effects
upon the performance of the entire system.
Please clean up and remove any unneeded files in your own disk space.
Try to be more aware of the resources needed to run any jobs that you have
in the system. And do not waste resources with programs such as ".what",
and ".friend" etc.

Reminder: Please be sure that you understand the code of unsolicited
shell scripts before executing them. Even programs that you receive from
friends may have hidden viruses and could cause problems both for you and
other computer users. Games and 'cute' messages are particularly suspect.
The Computing Consultants at ext. 4440 or helpdesk@uwindsor.ca would be
happy to help with any questions.
