New E-mail Disk Space Management for the SGI
============================================
From Aug 13 1997, an updated version of the E-mail disk management program will be run. This program will be run daily, after that date.

This policy only affects those people that have their mail delivered to the SGI Challenge XL known as "server.uwindsor.ca".  If you do not know which system your mail goes to, execute the following command at the SGI UNIX prompt:

         (1)% echo $MAIL

If the following is returned your mail goes to "server.uwindsor.ca"
(userid shown below is your login userid).

         /usr/mail/userid

To view how large your "incoming" mail box is, execute the following command at the SGI UNIX prompt (replace userid with your login userid):

         (1)% ls -l /var/mail/userid

You will receive output similar to this:

     -rw--w----    1 userid  mail      707595 Jul 24 10:46 userid

The key field is just to the left of the date.  This number (707595) is the size of your incoming mail box in bytes.  For reference, 1 Megabyte is 1,024,000 bytes and 1.5 Meg is 1,536,000 bytes.

The updated controls are outlined below. For more details see - June's Insight, or - contact the HelpDesk at (519) 253-3000 ext. 4440 or by e-mail at   'HelpDesk@uwindsor.ca' or
- enter 'public mail' at the unix prompt.

.  When your 'Inbox' exceeds 1 Mb (approx. 200 average sized messages),    daily e-mail warning messages will be sent to you asking you to delete  e-mail or move to a folder, until your mail box size drops under 1 Mb.

.  If your "Inbox" size exceeds an upper limit (1.5 Mb for Students,  20 Mb for faculty and staff), your "Inbox" will be trimmed, oldest first,  striving to reduce the mail box size to under 1 Mb.

.  Mail less than 7 days old WILL NOT be deleted even if your "Inbox" exceeds the upper limit. Thus, you will always have 7 days to read your mail and delete it or move it to a more permanent location. Any mail that has been trimmed by the automated program from your "Inbox" can be restored from backups for up to 21 days.

.  During the Christmas holidays, no mail will be deleted even if the upper limit is exceeded and 7 days have passed. The regular procedure will  resume after the holidays.

               Virtually yours,
