                      ELM VERSION 2.4
                      ***************
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, January 9, 1996
Elm has been upgraded to elm2.4pl25 from elm2.4pl24 to fix a bug. The switch should be transparent. If you have any questions or problems, please feel free to contact the HelpDesk at (519)253-4232 ext. 4440, or send email to 'helpdesk@uwindsor.ca'. For more information type "public elm".
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following warning is only applicable if the last time you used elm was before March 22, 1995 when elm 2.3.pl22 was running. However, if you have been using elm 2.4.pl24 (Mar 22 1995 - Jan 8 1996) the change should be transparent.

WARNING!  If you have been using aliases with Elm, you MUST issue the command newalias before you use the new version of elm for the first time only.

- Elm Aliases: Several versions ago, elm stopped supporting elm aliases created with "white space", i.e., blank spaces or tabs  separating aliases for groups. They must now be separated by commas. In order to upgrade, enter "newalias" if this fails do not enter the command again. You will then have to edit your  aliases.text file to make the following corrections:      1. Alias addresses must be separated by a comma  2. Alias addresses starting on a new line must start with at least one space or tab. In addition, unlike older versions of elm, group alias addresses do not need to be previously defined.

AS OF MAY 1 st 1995; THE OLD ELM (elm 2.3.pl22) WILL NO LONGER BE SUPPORTED.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The new elm has many new features in addition to all the previous features. However, if you would prefer to continue using the old elm for a while we will be keeping the old elm for a month. You can access the old elm by entering "oldelm". The old alias by entering "oldalias". In general the old elm commands can be accessed by entering "oldcommand" where command is the old elm command. The old elm man pages are also accessible by entering "man oldelm" and similarly the other old elm man pages.

New Features/Changes:

- ISpell : This helps you check the spelling of your mail before you send it. The ispell option will show up on the send menu if your User level specified in the elmrc is Intermediate User or Expert User. It will not be present if your user level is Beginning User.

- MIME support: Will allow you to receive and send MIME-compliant messages.

- There is a new ~/.elm/elmrc file with many new configurable options although elm will continue to work with your old elmrc file.  If you would like to update your elmrc file, type the letter 'o' at elm's main  menu for the 'options screen'.  Then type a greater than symbol (>) and elm will store the new version of the elmrc file in your .elm  directory.

- There is a new change in elm for handling mail folders.  To change to a new folder one would type the letter 'c' and receive the "Which  Folder ?" prompt.  At this point, typing a "?" will take you to a help file instead of listing all of your folders as in the past. To receive a list of all of your folders, type "=*".  Elm now supports wildcard searches, so you could also type "=rec*" to receive a list of all of your folders starting with rec.

- Less Pager: Some users would like to be able to move back when reading their mail. The default more pager is very slow at this. The less pager has been  installed and can be used by changing your pager to less.  I have found "less -QMec" to be very useful.

HINTS:
*****
- If you don't like having to type i to return to elm's main menu, you can change the "promptafter" to OFF in your elmrc.
