Dr. Peter Sale, former head of Biological Sciences, is Acting Director of the Great Lakes Institute of Environmental Research (GLIER) effective immediately until June 30.

Dr. Eleanor Maticka-Tyndale of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology has been appointed Faculty Research Consultant relating to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Her appointment in the Office of Research Services began July 1 and runs to June 30.

Dr. Ron Barron of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is the Interim Associate Vice-President Research. His appointment is for the remainder of 1999.

Dr. Janice Drakich of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology has been appointed Special Assistant to the Vice-President Academic and Director of Faculty Recruitment and Retention.

Two new appointments from outside the university were also announced.

New Chair For Social Work

Dr. Frank Hawkins, professor of Social Work at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, will be the next chair of the University of Windsor Social Work program. Dr. Hawkins is a former Director of Social Work at Memorial and is currently chair of PhD studies there. He says that the University of Windsor is committed to reinstating the graduate program in social work here, committing to hire two new faculty as soon as possible, and another two faculty members the following year. Windsor withdrew its graduate program in social work following the retirement of a number of faculty members in recent years.

University Names New Dean of Engineering

Dr. Graham Reader is a former naval commander with over 30 years of industrial and academic experience. He has spent the last 10 years as head of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Reader held various administrative and teaching positions in the United Kingdom including: the Royal Naval Engineering College's director of research and its head of Power and Electrical Engineering; head of the Stirling Engine Research Facility at the Royal Naval Marine Engineering College; and Bradford University's head of engineering science and mathematics. His industrial experience includes seven years in coal mining and 15 years in the Royal Navy and he is a registered professional engineer in Alberta, the U.K. and Europe.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineers and the Calgary Institute of Strategic Studies, and a member of several societies. He has over 300 technical and creative publications, including five books (one in Russian) to his credit and has received several honours and awards. He includes music, poetry and song writing among his many interests.

Senate - Five Year Plans

At the September meeting of the University of Windsor Senate : Academic Vice-President Neil Gold also Chair of the Senate Program Development Committee(PDC) said about 15 five-year plans were submitted by the September 15 deadline. This is about a third of the expected 45 or so plans under way. The second deadline is December 15.

The plans will undergo a preliminary review, a second and closer review by a committee of three members of the PDC, a student and representatives from the registrar and research services, and a third external review. The budget committee of the university will determine actual budget allocations based on Senate's actions.

Professor Gold also said that in accordance with an agreement between the universities and the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, the goal is for all undergraduate programs to eventually be reviewed on a seven-year cycle to assure the public that all programs in Ontario are carefully monitored and meet high standards.

University of Windsor 1999 United Way Campaign

This year it is the University's turn to Chair the Education Division of the United Way, which includes, the University, St. Clair College, Windsor Public Board, Catholic Board and the French Board.

The Campus Team includes Dr. Ross Paul, Dr. Datta Pillay(Education Co-Chair), Ms Renee Lewis(Education Co-Chair and Loan Representative) and Ms Karen Roland, University United Way Co-Chair.

The First-Ever Education Division Kick-Off was launched on Thursday, September 30, 1999 at 4.00 p.m. at Vanier Hall. About 130 members from all the institutions participated.
