In Memoriam

With deep sadness we record the deaths of the following members of University of Windsor in July & August 1998.

Ian Cleghorn Pemberton

Died at home on August 13, 1998 at age 61. Dr. Pemberton was retired Professor of History. At his request there was no period of visitation. A memorial service was later held at the University.

Lucien Lamoureux

Canada's longest serving Speaker of the House of Commons and Chancellor of the University of Windsor from 1976-1984 died at the age of 77 on July 16, 1998, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer at his home in Waterloo, Belgium. Mr Lamoureax was presented with the Order of Canada by the Canadian Ambassador to Belgium at his home three days earlier. He retired from politics in 1974 and was appointed Canadian Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg till 1980 and as Ambassador to Portugal till 1985.

Retirees Annual Picnic

was held at the residence of Bob and Jean Chandler on Sunday, August 9, 1998. Although it was one of the hottest and humid days of August, yet more than 35 members showed up and enjoyed an afternoon of socializing and later barbequing their supper. In spite of the hot weather, the swimming pool next to their chairs did not tempt any one to jump in.

Bob and Jean put up a terrific party and were excellent hosts for the afternoon. Our thanks to them.

Computer USER- ID Charges

Your Executive Committee is still pursuing this matter. A Joint Committee Meeting between the University Administration and the Retirees Association as per the provisions in the Collective Agreement was held on Monday, September 21, 1998 Four Retiree representatives (Stan Cunningham, Kumar Chatterjee, Joseph Habowsky and Gerry Monforton) met with the University team ( Vice Presidents Neil Gold and Eric Harbottle and Roger Lauzon, Director, Information Technology Services). The meeting was very productive. Each group explained their respective positions.

The University team stressed the issue as only a security matter and not an income generating proposition. It was pointed out that there are 150 retirees with User - ID's and only about 50 are active users. The possibility exists that some abuse may occur without the knowledge of the retiree member.

Our Retiree members offered many suggestions which is being considered by the University and they are expected to provide us with a draft proposal how to avoid any abuse. In all probability we may not have to pay any User -ID fees.

We hope to advise you as soon as we hear from them. In the meantime your patience is much appreciated.

Faculty Contract Settlement Pension Surplus

On page 8 a summary of the pension surplus disbursements is provided (not available in the electronic edition). On September 17, 1998, during the Faculty Association Contract Information meeting, Stan Cunningham spoke to the membership ( his statement appears on page 6 of this newsletter). He recommended that the contract not be ratified since the retirees were unjustly treated in not distributing a significant portion of the pension surplus.

Group Grievance Launched

As a follow-up to the above matter, two grievances were launched one by an individual member and the other by a group of seven members to protest the unjust disbursement of the pension surplus.

The remedy suggested includes not to implement that part of the Contract that deals with the pension surplus or pension contribution holiday, until there has been a reasonable and proper examination of and report on the adequacy of the retirement benefits provided to former faculty members and certain others by the Committee required to do so under the provisions of the Collective Agreement. Such examination and report must fairly and equitably reflect the interests of retired members including their concerns about indexing in the Minimum Guarantee portion of the pension plan.

Retirees' Luncheon

A Retirees Luncheon hosted by President Ross Paul and Dr. Gordon Drake, President of the Faculty Association was held on October 1, 1998 in the Ambassador Auditorium. The event was well attended by a number retirees and their friends and colleagues.

This party was postponed from an earlier date in June, which was set for a Dinner Dance.

The Newsletter

The Retirees' Newsletter is put out by the Faculty, Librarian Administrator Retirees' Association of the University of Windsor, five times per year: -- in February, April, June, October and December.

Its main purpose is to inform our retirees on matters of direct interest to them - such as their pensions, benefits, association activities, etc. and, equally, to provide a channel for retirees to keep in touch with each other and with outside groups, including the Faculty Association and the University.

The Newsletter welcomes from readers their comments, arguments, contributions and creative work.
