The Association

The Retirees' Association (Faculty,Librarian, Administrator -WURA) at
Windsor was formed in 1990, to give a unified voice to retirees; to provide a
bridge for communication with the University; to encourage social contact
among the retirees; and to open a few doors through which retirees could
continue to contribute to the University of Windsor.
Thus the Association is meant to fill what could otherwise be a void in the
lives of retirees possible isolation from the University and from their former
colleagues; and possible lack of understanding of vital pension and health
issues that affect them directly.

There are only two meetings of the full membership per year: in the spring
and the fall. An informal social committee arranges several other events per
year dinners, plays, picnics, and so on all of which are paid for by those
who take part. The Association encourages smaller special interest groups
to form as occasion and their interests warrant. Because of extreme
economy of operation, dues have been kept at the level of $20 per year. This
includes four issues of The Retirees' Newsletter .

Newsletter - Four Issues A Year - Effective immediately,
the Retirees' Newsletter will be published four times a year in March,
June, September and December. Even four issues a year is an
enormous task for any member in retirement. As your editor, I thank each
one of you for the compliments, support and encouragement you have
extended to the Newsletter and its contents, which has made my task
easy.

Retirees' Concerns: The WURA
Executive this past year addressed many
matters affecting the retirees' - adequacy
of pension plan (D7 Committee work),
health benefits, improvements to retiree
pension through Faculty Association
Contract proposals ( 2001 - 2004 ) see
page 4 for details.

Article D 16 is a significant inclusion in the
proposal with the support of the Faculty
Association. If this clause is approved it
will immensely improve retirees' pension.

For the first time in 18 years since the D7
provision has existed in the Collective
Agreement, this Committee met on a
regular basis and produced a report
addressing many aspects of the pension
plan. With the permission of the Faculty
Association this report will be made
available to all members.

A revised Health Benefits proposal , with
a modified structure to include a new
category of couples is presented on page
7. All the above matters will be up for
discussion at the Spring general Meeting
on March 15, 2001.

Membership Drive and $ 20 Dues:
Organizations survive or fail on the
strength and support of their membership and
collective voice. This plea is on behalf of our
Treasurer to gently remind those who have
not paid the dues for 2000-2001( about 45
members). Please send in your cheques.
The small membership dues has been put to
good use by the Retirees Executive
Committee, particularly in publishing 4 issues
of the Newsletter and being extremely stingy
in spending the money. On pages 9 -12 of
this newsletter, is a list of members of WURA.

Retirees Bursary Fund - This fund
has surpassed the $ 50,000 mark in just five
years, since its establishment. This year your
Executive has decided to offer Three
bursaries. I am pleased to echo the pleas in
previous editorial column requests to
contribute to the Bursary Fund. It's certainly a
matter of great pride for the Association to
have accumulated over $ 50,000 in such a
short time. Contributions are payable to
"University of Windsor-Retirees' Bursary
Fund" and addressed to the Office of Student
Awards, University of Windsor, Windsor, ON,
N9B 3P4- Please Mark envelope - "Attention
of Ms. Aase Cuthbert, Director of Awards".
