Yes Retirees Seem To have Clout!
President's Position Paper:
President Ross Paul within the short period of four months, had several contacts with representatives of the Retirees' Association and in his recently released Strategic Planning Paper, has recognized the role that retirees association could play in helping him in his mission to move the University of Windsor forward into the new millennium.
According to Dr. Paul, retirees have a wealth of experience, knowledge and history of the institution, which makes them a valuable resource people. He stated that he would consult the Retirees Association on his position paper. Of course, he has lived up to his words and arranged to provide all our members with a copy of the position paper. I urge all our members, to take the time to read the document, and offer their suggestions, comments or criticisms. We have a duty now to act and not simply glance at it and leave it to collect dust.
Your comments could be written or telephonic messages to any member of the Executive Committee or to the writer. The Executive Committee will meet in September to prepare its comments to be forwarded to the President. Your comments could very well be incorporated in that response.
Retirees Representation on Faculty Association Committees:
As a follow-up to the resolution adopted at the Spring General Meeting, President Kumar has written to the Faculty Association on such representation. The Faculty Association is set to discuss our request. We have the mandate from the membership to achieve our objectives of proper representation, if the Faculty Association continues to represents our interests. Failing which, the Retirees' Association must takes steps to deal directly with the University.
Some Retirees Disheartened:
Recently, some colleagues have expressed disappointment with retirement, finding it difficult to continue their former relationship with the University they served for so many years, unless they are offered the opportunity to some teaching. I believe many share this experience and feel it a great waste that so little effort put forth to use this terrific pool of talent which can be had either free or next to it. In another instance, one of our members who continues to be active in research has been discouraged in his attempts to seek assistance from the University. I suggest that these matters be reviewed in the Retirees' Executive Committee, before it is brought to the attention of the President of the University, who is so positive about Retirees role.

The Association
The Retirees' Association (Faculty, Librarian, Administrator) at Windsor was formed in 1990, to give a unified voice to retirees; to provide a bridge for communication with the University; to encourage social contact among the retirees; and to open a few doors through which retirees could continue to contribute to the University of Windsor.
Thus the Association is meant to fill what could otherwise be a void in the lives of retirees - possible isolation from the University and from their former colleagues; and possible lack of understanding of vital pension and health issues that affect them directly.
There are only two meetings of the full membership per year: in the spring and the fall. An informal social committee arranges several other events per year - dinners, plays, picnics, and so on -all of which are paid for by those who take part. The Association encourages smaller special interest groups to form as occasion and their interests warrant. Because of extreme economy of operation, dues have been kept at the level of $10 per year. This includes five issues of The Retirees' Newsletter .
