EDITORIAL RAMBLES: Walt Romanow made an interesting point (p.2 above), when he
included "professors/librarians/administrators..." Our Pension Plan covers the academic
side and ... "certain other classes of administrative employees..." Might it be a good idea to
link up with them? Maybe worth considering... Pres. Habib cited his note to University
Pres. Ianni protesting any proposed University charges on retirees. Here, here! However,
retirees shouldn't forget that they are widely seen today as the over-privileged members
of society, while younger folk are struggling against very bleak long-term prospects.
Guess that's why I'm so hep on our bursary fund: it's the kind of symbol we need. At least
it shows a desire to reach out and help. ...I want to welcome Joan Hackett as an Associate
Editor, who will contribute articles to The Newsletter. She starts with a delightful
little piece in this issue. ...I doubt if many realize how long it takes to put one of these
Newsletters together: that is, from the first blank sheets of paper to the finished
product. For one person, would you believe a minimum of one full (seven-day) week - not
counting the mailing chore which is another day at least. Then out it goes into the
great echo-less cavern... like "is there anybody out there?" ... Oh wow, just to get a letter-to-the-editor now and then!.... Incidentally, I agree with Walt R. that a Canada-wide
grouping would be too costly. Our little Association, for example, has no secretarial
help, and nothing to pay for it anyway...Incidentally, the membership list is up-to-date,
without too many flaws, I hope, and for which I apologize in advance. I checked with Jim
Skinner to add home departments and dates of retirement to the list, thinking this
might add to its usefulness.(?) ...As I look around, there seem to be retirees eligible to join
who haven't. A bit surprising. Surely it can't be a matter of principle - though, in this day
and age, maybe it is!... I shall make a real effort to get the next issue out early in October, a
few weeks in advance of the annual Fall General Meeting. Have a great summer!
