BILL COLBORNE WRITES FROM PORT ELGIN

CONGRATULATIONS on an excellent Newsletter. I enjoy reading it and keeping up with the doings of fellow retirees. Betty and I have been doing some travelling with the U.N.B. Alumni, our being included because of good friends on the Faculty of U.N.B., now retired. Our first trip was to Britain in May, 1994, then to the Far East in the fall of 1995.

ON THE BRITISH TRIP we were accompanied by a Professor of English a native of England and graduate of Cambridge and by the Alumni Director. The faculty member shared his knowledge of Shakespeare's England, while the Alumni Director arranged meetings and receptions with alumni branches in England. The Far East trip was well worth the effort. Although we were programmed during the entire time, we realized it was what we needed to accomplish so much. We were a group of 24 U.N.B. alumni, and the trip covered Beijing, Xian, Canton, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore.

LIFE IN COTTAGE COUNTRY is what you make it. We have many new friends who have also retired here. Most of us are active in volunteer groups, such as Friends of the Museum and University Women's Club. Bill is active in the Rail Trail Association, which is developing a biking trail along an abandoned rail line between Port Elgin and Southampton.

BOB CHANDLER: TRAVELS -- INTERNET AND OTHERWISE

THE TWO ITEMS about the Internet in the February Newsletter have prompted me to drop you a note about my "life after retirement". I retired in 1994 from the School of Social Work and, like so many others, I have found life both busy and enjoyable.

My wife Jean retired from teaching with the Windsor Board of Education last June and we celebrated our new-found "freedom" with a wonderful trip "down under" to New Zealand and Australia in November. A planned trip to Israel, the Sinai and Greece in April has had to be postponed because of uncertainties in the region. When not travelling, we both enjoy singing in the choir of St. Matthew's Church.

EACH DAY BRINGS NEW DISCOVERIES as I "surf the Net". I am Webmaster for the Social Work Windsor page on the University's Explore service. Searching for items of interest to add to the page, and making design changes, provide learning experiences and much enjoyment. The page recently won a 4-star "Magellan" award from the McKinley Group, an Internet review and rating service. Apparently this is the first site at the University of Windsor to receive the 4-star award. The page can be found at the following internet address:

http://www.uwindsor.ca/faculty/socsci/socwk/index.html

A link to the retirees' page at the University of Calgary is on the front page.

I ALSO OPERATE TWO "LISTSERV" ELECTRONIC MAILING LISTS on the Internet hosted by the University of Windsor's pdomain server. They are: CSOCWORK,: Canadian Social Work Forum, with over 200 members from nine countries; and CANANG-L, Canadian Anglican Forum, with over 150 subscribers from five countries. These Internet activities have put me in touch with people all over the world, many of whom have become friends even though we have never met in person.

Add membership on the boards of UNICOM, Social Work Windsor-Essex, Windsor Power and Sail Squadron and St. Matthew's Church. To paraphrase the old saying about grandchildren (and I have two), "If I had known retirement was so much fun, I would have done it first!".

DR. WILLIAM JONES, VP ACADEMIC, WRITES CONCERNING OUR BURSARY

Thank you very much for sending me a copy of the Retirees' Newsletter, Issue No. 16 for February 1996. It was very kind of you to draw my attention to the great progress that the bursary fund is making. The fact that it has now moved beyond $10,000 is great news, and you and your colleagues are to be congratulated on this grand effort. With best wishes for a successful Spring meeting,
W.E. Jones.
