Engineering Students Build And Drive Mini-Baja Vehicle In International Meet
By Nneka Nnolim
University of Windsor DailyNews
Tuesday, June 27, 2000

Two University of Windsor Mechanical and Automotive Engineering students, Greg Batenburg and James Blackman, competed in the 2000 SAE Midwest Mini Baja Competition in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, June 1 to 4.

The annual event that is organized and sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). At this year's competition, more than 106 teams from Canada, the United States, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and South Korea designed, built, and raced their respective single-seat off-road vehicles. Each of the competitors had to deal with intense judging as their vehicles were evaluated for design theory, performance, acceleration, top speed, and manoeuvrability.

The 2000 vehicle is based on a successful vehicle built for the 1999 SAE Mini-Baja event. Batenburg and Blackman worked hard to improve and enhance the Windsor Baja entry by addressing issues which were found on last's years vehicle. They worked at Centerline Special Machine Division and created the majority of the new components on their own. The remaining parts for the car were purchased from Windsor area businesses. The duo devoted almost six months to the design, construction and testing of their vehicle. At the competition, the team was 45th overall, which puts them in the top half of all North American universities in this area of expertise. The car earned a 35th place finish in the design event, and 36th in the endurance race portion of the competition which are excellent results for a young team with only two members. The students worked on this project on a volunteer basis under the supervision of Dr. Peter Frise and Dr. Bill Altenhof of Mechanical, Automotive and Materials Engineering.

"Overall, our team is pleased with our results, and elated with the performance of the vehicle," said Batenburg. "Sponsor support was crucial to the success of this team." Financial support for the team was provided by Centerline Windsor Limited. The company also opened up their facilities to allow the team to assemble their vehicle. Valiant Machine and Tool was responsible for the creation of the car's frame.

The team has no intentions of slowing down, as they gear up for their next challenge. "In the future, James and I plan to participate in the 2000-2001 Formula SAE Competition in Pontiac, Michigan in May 2001," said Batenburg. "The purpose of this event is to build a small Formula 1-style race vehicle. Financial support for this effort is also appreciated." Blackman and Batenburg are co-captians of a team of 10 students who are working on the Formula SAE vehicle as part of their final year thesis project which is being done under the supervision of Drs. Altenhof, Sobiesiak and Frise.

Engineering Students Hit The Off-Road
University of Windsor DailyNews
Tuesday, June 1, 2004

There is an endurance component to the SAE Mini Baja competition, but the students involved are finding out it's not just their car's endurance being tested.

The Society of Automotive Engineers hosts the international design competition, with teams of engineering students from across North America designing, building, and racing off-road vehicles which must survive the toughest conditions; steep slopes, bumps and obstacles, jumps of up to feet five in the air, and a four-hour endurance race against as many as 140 entries.

The eight members of the University of Windsor Midwest Mini Baja team, all fourth-year mechanical engineering students, have been working day and night to finish their entry in time to make the trip to Milwaukee tomorrow for the 2004 competition.

"This is the toughest deadline we've ever been given for a project," says the team's technical head, Kevin Spicer. "If we're not done, we can't compete. It's that simple."

All of the vehicles use identical ten-horsepower engines, so the competition is all about the design and construction. The Windsor team has high hopes, noting its vehicle weighs only 450 lbs. and has a specialized suspension that allows for 12 inches of wheel travel to handle tricky terrain.

Helper Dan Clement is in the driver's seat, surrounded by the university's Midwest Mini Baja team: Trevor Hassall, Kevin Spicer, Michael Matak, Cristian Linte, Brendan Vido, Rob Rieveley, Sarah Paterson, and Dave Sternbauer.

This year the team nickname was "Vimtoe" and the vehicle number was 31. Below you can see the stats for 2004.
