BIOGRAPHY: 
Syed Ejaz Ahmed was born in Karachi, a coastal city
in the Southeast of Pakistan. Pakistan emerged on the map of the world as
an independent sovereign state on August 14, 1947, as a result of the division
of the British Indian Empire. The land of Pakistan is rich in landscapes and
cultural traditions. Historically, this is one of the most ancient lands known
to man. Its cities flourished before Babylon was built. Karachi is the capital
of the province of Sindh, beside this province there are three other provinces.
Karachi is the intellectual and financial capital of Pakistan. Generally or
perhaps statistically speaking, Karachiites are most cultured, highly educated
and industrious.
Ejaz Ahmed's parents migrated from India. His father was a civil servant and
on the call of the Founder of Pakistan, M. A. Jinah, He opted for Pakistan
to help in building the newly born country, like many others. He served in
many towns/cities of rural Sindh and finally moved to Karachi in the late
fifties. He taught Ejaz languages and rudiments of mathematics at home, and
then he was admitted to a school in grade four. After completing inter-science
(equivalent to grade 12) he went on to the University of Karachi and completed
an under graduate degree with honors and a Master of Science degree in Statistics.
Right after, A major bank appointed him as a Bank Officer. Later he enrolled
in the evening program of the Institute of Business Administration. However,
work was not intellectually stimulating and he decided to leave for North
America to pursue higher education. Dr. Ahmed received a Master of Science
degree from the University of Guelph and a Ph.D. from Carleton University.
Ejaz Ahmed is Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics
and and Assocaite Faculty Member, Faculty of Engineering at the University of
Regina . Before joining the University of Regina, he had a faculty position
at the University of Western Ontario. Further, he is a Senior Advisor to Sigma
Analytics (Data Mining & Reserach), Regina. He developed the Master of Science
and Doctoral Program in Statistics and produced the first Ph.D. student from
this program. He also established the under graduate co-op program in Statistics
and is developing the undergraduate program in Actuarial Science. This program
is expected to receive financial support from the public and private sector.
This is the first time such a program is being established in the Province of
Saskatchewan. He founded the under graduate internship program in actuarial
science and is is in the process of developing an under graduate combined program
in Biology and Statistics.
His area of expertise includes statistical inference, multivariate analysis
and asymptotic theory. He has numerous published articles in scientific journals,
both collaborative and methodological. Furthher, he co-edited two volumes and
organized many sessions and workshops. He made several invited scholarly presentations
in various countries and supervised graduate students both at masters' and Ph.D.
level. Dr Ahmed serves on the editorial board of many statistical journals.
He enjoys teaching statistics to students in all disciplines at various levels
and is interested in the development of novel approaches to statistical/actuarial
education on-line. He is an elected member of the International Statistical
Institute and a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. He served as a Board
of Director and Chairman of the Education Committee of the Statistical Society
of Canada.
In 1989 he married Gahazla and they have two children Jazib and Feryaal. The
family has a keen interest in learning the other cultures, faiths and religions
of the world. They enjoy traveling by automobile; recently they extensively
toured the various countries of Europe by car. They will be glad to provide
travel tips for Far Eastern countries, Europe and North America.
