COMPOSING YOUR MESSAGE: THE PICO EDITOR

When you type your message, you are actually using an editor program called Pico. Pico is like most other word processing programs. For example, words will be automatically wrapped to the next line if they do not fit on the current line. To move the cursor on the editing screen, use the four arrow keys () to position the cursor. To enter text at a specific location, move the cursor to the beginning position of where the text is to be inserted and simply type the text. To add a blank line within the message, move the cursor to the beginning of the line above which you want the blank line to appear and press the Enter key. In addition, Pico also has a number of editor functions that are activated by holding down the Ctrl key (abbreviated as ^) and pressing a letter. Although many of these functions are indicated on the bottom of the editor screen, some of the most often used functions are detailed below.

Deleting Text: To delete text you may either: 1) move the cursor to the beginning position of where the text is to be deleted, hold down the Ctrl key and press d until the desired text has been deleted, or 2) move the cursor to the end position of where the text is to be deleted and press the backspace key, which appears as above the Enter key, until the desired text has been deleted.

Next Page/Previous Page: To move to the next page of text, hold down the Ctrl key and press v. To move to the previous page of text, hold down the Ctrl key and press y.

Cut/Paste: To cut text out from the editor screen (i.e., delete a block of text and store temporarily), you must first mark (i.e., highlight) the text to let the computer know which text you wish to cut. To mark the text, hold down the Ctrl key and press ^ (i.e., Shift 6). The message "[ Mark Set ]" will appear at the bottom of the screen to indicate that you are marking text. Using the four arrow key (), highlight the text to be cut. To cut the text, hold down the Ctrl key and press k. The text will be removed from the screen and saved temporarily. To paste the text elsewhere (i.e., uncut), move the cursor to the point where you wish to insert the text, hold down the Ctrl key and press u.

Spell Check: To check the spelling of your message, hold down the Ctrl key and press t.

Justify: When you delete text, you may need to rejustify the text to allow as many word to be placed on a line as possible. To justify text, hold down the Ctrl key and press j.

Help: To get help on all of the functions of the Pico editor, hold down the Ctrl key and press g. Press e to exit help.

SENDING YOUR MESSAGE

When you are finished composing your message you will probably want to send it. To send the message, hold down the Ctrl key and press x. At the "Send message ?" prompt, press y for yes. The message will then be processed for sending and you will return to the Pine Main Menu. If you do not wish to send the message but instead wish to continue editing the message, at the "Send message ?" prompt, press n for no. To cancel the message and return back to the Pine Main Menu, hold down the Ctrl key and press c from the Pico editor screen. At the prompt "Cancelling will abandon your mail message. Cancel ?", press y for yes. Your message will be cancelled and you will return back to the Pine Main Menu.

Please note that although you may receive the prompt "Message sent", this does not necessarily mean that the message was received. The prompt simply means that the message was sent to the E-Mail server to be processed. If the message was not addressed properly, the E-Mail server will return your message back to you in your inbox with the subject "Returned mail: User unknown".
