SETTING UP PEGASUS MAIL

When you first install Pegasus Mail, it is important that Pegasus Mail be able to locate the socket program. To do this, you must ensure that the directory in which the socket program is located is included in the path statement in your autoexec.bat file. If not, add the directory to the path statement and reboot the computer.

To configure Pegasus Mail, from the "File" menu at the top, select "Network configuration...". The network configuration parameters are as follows:

POP3 host: server.uwindsor.ca

User name: your SGI userid

Password: your SGI password

SMTP host: email.uwindsor.ca.

When finished, click on the "OK" button.

Under "Advanced configuration options...", many people check the "Send mail at once without placing in queue" and "Delete mail from host once successfully retrieved" option boxes. In addition, you may set other preferences from the "Tools" menu at the top by selecting "Options...".

ACCESSING PEGASUS MAIL

You must first make a graphics-based connection to the Internet through a socket program. After making the connection, you can then run Pegasus Mail.

PEGASUS MAIL FUNCTIONS

Below are some of the most common actions performed in Pegasus Mail. Many of these actions can be performed through toolbar icons at the top.

Composing and Sending E-Mail: To compose a new message, from the "File" menu at the top, select "New message" or click on the toolbar icon with the pen and paper on it. You will then be presented with a new message window. At the "To:" line, click to set the insertion point and type the recipient's user name and, if needed, Internet address. At the "Subj:" line, click to set the insertion point and type a short description of the subject of your message. At the "Cc:" line, click to set the insertion point and type the user name and, if needed, Internet address, of the individual to whom you wish to send a courtesy copy of your E-Mail message. Some people enter their own user name to received a copy of their E-Mail message in their own inbox as a record of what was sent. Alternatively, you can check the "Copy self" option box which will instruct Pegasus Mail to place a copy of your sent E-Mail message in your "Copies to self" mail folder. Your mail folders can be accessed from the "File" menu at the top by selecting "Mail folders..." or clicking on the toolbar icon with the open folder on it. You are now ready to type your message.

Composing Your Message: To begin your message, click in the message area to set the insertion point and type your message. Below are some useful functions to help you compose your message:

Reformat Paragraph: Although Pegasus Mail will word wrap your message, if you delete text, it will not automatically reformat your text. To reformat a paragraph, move the cursor pointer to the beginning of the paragraph to be reformatted and click to set the insertion point. From the "Message" menu at the top, select "Reformat paragraph".

Spell Check: To check the spelling of your message, from the "Tools" menu at the top, select "Check spelling...".

Including Attachments/Enclosures: Often you may want to include a file (e.g., WordPerfect document, graphics image, etc.) with your E-Mail message. There are two ways to include such a file with your E-Mail message: as an attachment or as an enclosure. An attachment is a file that is sent as a separate E-Mail item when you send your E-Mail message. An enclosure is a file that is enclosed at the bottom of your E-Mail message. Although enclosures can confuse some older E-Mail systems, it is the preferred method of sending a file with your E-Mail message since only one E-Mail item is sent. Pegasus Mail uses MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions), an Internet standard for the transmission of data of any type via electronic mail, to assist it in composing and deciphering E-Mail messages with attachments/enclosures. MIME defines the way messages should be formatted and constructed and has provisions for indicating the type and nature of the contents of a message. For example, MIME has direct support for many graphics image formats. To set up Pegasus Mail to send enclosures instead of attachments, from the "Tools" menu at the top, select "Options...". From the "Categories" menu, select "Advanced settings". Check the "Send enclosures instead of attachments" option box then click on the "OK" button. To include an attachment/enclosure file with your E-Mail message, from the message window, click on the "Attach" icon tab along the left side of the window. The "Drives" pull-down menu allows you to select the drive on which your attachment/enclosure file is located. The "Directories" menu provides you with a listing of directories allowing you to select the directory in which your attachment/enclosure file is located. The ".." symbol is used to indicate the parent directory (i.e., moving up the directory tree one step). The "Files" menu provides you with a listing of all files in the currently selected directory. Although you may specify the encoding method to be used for the file you are attaching/enclosing by selecting the encoding method from the "Encoding:" pull-down menu, most people let Pegasus Mail decide the method to use as indicated by "Mailer decides". You may also indicate the type of file in the attachment/enclosure for informational purposes to the recipient by selecting the correct file type from the "File Type" pull-down menu. If not, you may leave the default of "Mailer decides". To actually select the enclosure/attachment file, double click on the file name. You will then see that your selected file is included in the "Current attachments:" menu. To return to the editor, click on the "Edit" icon tab along the left side of the message window.

Sending Your Message: To send your message, click on the "Send" icon. Please note that although you may receive the prompt "Message was sent successfully", this does not necessarily mean that the message was received. The prompt simply means that the message was sent to the E-Mail server to be processed. If the message was not addressed properly, the E-Mail server will return your message back to you in your inbox with the subject "Returned mail: User unknown".

Check Host for New E-Mail: To check the host for new E-Mail, from the "File" menu at the top, select "Check host for new mail" or click on the toolbar icon with the world on the left and a red arrowhead on the right. Your new mail folder will be opened and display your inbox messages.

Reading Your E-Mail: To read your E-Mail, move the arrow pointer to the message you wish to read and double click. To delete the message, click on the "Delete" icon.
