Instructional/Needs Design Assignment Choices

Gagne suggested that each lesson/activity include nine instructional events (see course package). Working with a partner of your choice if you wish, choose a software program from the list of available software here at the Faculty. Using the software chart in your course package, decide which events the software addresses and indicate the instructional techniques used by the software to address those events. Fill in any missing events, or any events you feel are not addressed sufficiently by the software, with one or two instructional techniques of your own. When complete, each of the nine instructional events will be addressed, either by the software, by your own instructional techniques, or a combination of both. Your assignment must include the completed software chart, a student task sheet, and all student handouts. The assignment may be neatly written instead of typed.

Prerequisites: None

Ragsdale suggested that rather than focusing instruction around a chosen software program, teachers should focus on addressing student needs (see course package). That is, examine students' needs first, suggest several methods by which those needs can be addressed, then choose those methods that best address the needs. Working with a partner of your choice if you wish, fill in the needs assessment chart (see course package) using a real student whom you feel has special needs that you have met through your teaching. One of the nominated methods in the chart must use the computer. Rank the methods for each need and suggest two methods that you feel address the student's needs the best. Your completed assignment must include the completed assessment chart, a written description of the student's needs, and detailed descriptions of the two instructional methods you feel best address the student's needs. Keep in mind that the computer may not be one of the two final selections. The assignment may be neatly written instead of typed.

Prerequisites: A general knowledge of available educational computer software
