The Faculty of Education recognizes the significant role Associate Teachers play in both the professional, as well as the social development of teacher candidates during the practicum; the practicum placement being a collaborative opportunity for teacher candidates to integrate the theory and pedagogical principles learned in faculty course work, with experiential learning during the teaching practice in the classroom. During the practicum, the Associate Teacher has a unique opportunity to guide, support, and mentor beginning teachers. They are creating a learning-centred approach in which, as is the case in most mentor relationships, the learning is reciprocal, challenging and dynamic. This partnership or triumvirate relationship involving Teacher Candidate, Associate Teacher, and Faculty Advisor, may be characterized as an opportunity for both instructors and learner to engage in the learning process to ultimately guide the teacher candidate in reaching their potential as future teachers.
