The J. Anthony Blair Prize

In keeping with one of OSSA's primary aims, which is to draw new scholars to the study of argumentation theory, the Society offers the J. Anthony Blair Prize.

 Adjudication:

The 2008 Blair Prize Committee is consists of the following four individuals. 

  • Dr. Michael Gilbert (Philosophy, York University), Committee Chair
  • Dr. Eveline Feteris (Speech Communication, Argumentation Theory and Rhetoric, University of Amsterdam)
  • Dr. David Godden (Philosophy, Old Dominion University)
  • Dr. Beth Innocenti, (Communication Studies, University of Kansas)

However, all correspondence relating to the competition should be addressed to Dr.Hans  Hansen at  hhansen@uwindsor.ca , and not to members of the committee.

Eligibility: In order to be eligible, the following conditions must be met:

  • The paper was written by a graduate student who had not officially graduated before September 8, 2008.
  • A paper with joint authors is eligible only if all authors satisfy the above condition.
  • The paper has been accepted for the OSSA Conference that will take place in June 2008.

Copies of completed papers must be received by  March 9, 2009.  

Criteria: Papers will be judged by the following criteria:

  • Clarity and organization of the paper
  • Thoroughness and quality of arguments (i.e., problematic claims are defended or otherwise dealt with, no obvious mistakes occur, well-known objections are answered)
  • Originality of insights and significance of implications
  • Coverage of the literature (the main contending positions are referred to)
  • Relevance to the theme and interests of the conference

Prize: A Plaque and $500.

The J. Anthony Blair Prize will be presented during the conference.

Past winners of the Blair prize

2001 - Jan Albert van Laar  (University of Groningen) Ambiguity in dialogue.

2003 – Amy Ohler (McMaster University) A dialectical tier within reason.

2005 – Lilian Bermejo-Luque (University of Murcia) Toulmin’s model of argument and the question of relativism.

2007 – Linda Carozza (York University) Dissent in the midst of emotional territory. (Co-recipient)

2007 – Paula Olmos (Universidad Nacional de Education a Distancia) Making it public: Testimony and socially sanctioned common grounds.  (Co-recipient)
