Emeritus Professor of Physics
M.A., D. Phil. (Oxford 1967)
Research Interests:
- Spectroscopy of Excimer Molecules and Clusters:
High and medium resolution spectroscopy of excimers and clusters
including Hg and rare gas atoms. Resonantly-enhanced multi-photon
ionisation is used with time of flight mass analysis.
- Lifetimes of Atoms and Molecules:
Experimental measurements of the lifetimes of selected levels of atoms
and molecules. Past work has studied the alkalis, Hg, Pb, and Hg2.
- Collisional cross-sections of atoms and molecules:
Experimental cross-sections for mixing of the fine-structure states of
the alkalis have been made. More recent work has measured the
cross-sections for the formation of excimers in their excited states by
collisions between excited and ground state atoms.
My laboratory is now closed. I will not be taking any new graduate students.
