Essay Assignment
Theory of Knowledge
34-254-01

Read "Knowledge Needs no Justification" by Hilary Kornblith.  It is the first chapter in Epistemology, New Essays.  What is Kornblith's main argument in this paper?  How good is his argument?  In a 1500 word (approximately 5 page) paper, answer the preceding questions, and defend your position.  You may agree or disagree with Kornblith (or even a little of both), but whatever you do, be sure you develop your position.

The paper should have one inch margins all the way around.  A title page is optional.  Since I mark blind, please do not place your name anywhere on the paper.  Be sure to place your student number somewhere on the front page.  Any referencing format that makes use of specific page numbers is acceptable.  In other words, footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical citations are all fine; just pick a style, and use it consistently and correctly.  Refer to page numbers where appropriate.

The word limit is enforced (as discussed in class).  Be concise.  Do not waist words.  Please do not waist space by making sweeping claims like, "Since the beginning of time....".  I am not asking you to write about the beginning of time.  I am asking you to (a) tell me what Kornblith's arguments are in some detail, and (b) evaluate them.  You do not have space to do anything else, so don't.

Due date: October 11, 2012.

I wish you good luck and an enjoyable philosophical experience.
