Day 20

۰ Questions on the final exam study questions?

۰ Goldman’s setup of TT on 1st and 3rd Person Attributions

۰ What is the main argument? (p. 70)

۰ Developmental evidence is crucial for that argument.  False belief tasks are one type of developmental evidence used against ST.

۰ Examples: smarties task, Sally & Anne task

۰ How has the developmental evidence been traditionally used against ST?

(a) Sudden acquisition of ability to pass false belief tasks around ages 4 or 5 looks like and appears to be explained by the acquisition of a new concept (false belief).

(b)   Parallelism of 1st and 3rd person attributions would be hard for ST to explain.

۰ An aside: how understanding false belief attributions helps us to understand part of what it is to be an agent.

۰ Challenges to the evidence that false belief tasks are generally not passed before the age of 4.  This is a challenge to (a).

          Examples: pp.73, 77.

۰ Challenge to Meltzoff (p. 91).

۰ Challenge to parallelism; this is a challenge to (b).

۰ Please read SM, chp. 8 for next time.  Read chp. 10 to get ahead.
