Essay 1
Please read all of Pollock' and Cruz' "Epistemology and Rationality" (starting on page 205 of the course pack). This piece is chapter six of their Contemporary Theories of Knowledge. Do not worry about their references to other parts of their book. I want you to write an essay (1500 words) in which you explain the Pollock-Cruz view on naturalizing epistemology. To do this, you will need to focus on section 4 of the assigned chapter. Do not ignore the rest of the paper; I am simply saying that much of your paper will be engaging section 4. I want you to do three things. First, explain what Pollock and Cruz take naturalized epistemology to be in general. Second, explain the particular type of naturalized epistemology that Pollock and Cruz endorse. Third, evaluate their position. You may agree or disagree with their views, but be sure to defend your position. The paper should have one inch margins all the way around. A title page is optional. Since I mark blind, please do not place your name anywhere on the paper. Be sure to place your student number somewhere on the front page. Any referencing format that makes use of specific page numbers is acceptable. In other words, footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical citations are all fine; just pick a style, and use it consistently and correctly. Refer to page numbers where appropriate.
