NATIVE CANADIAN LITERATURE
in the Leddy Library
University of Windsor
Introduction
The idea for a record of the holdings of works of literature by and about Canadian writers of native origin in the Leddy Library originated with a concern expressed by Dr. Bernie Harder of the Department of English at the University of Windsor, that the Library of Congress Classification System and List of Subject Headings did not readily allow students and other users to identify works by native authors.
During the past few years there has been an increasing interest in the study of native literature, as well as an interest in the work of native writers by the general public. The purpose of this holdings record is intended only to provide a means of identification for the assistance of students and the general reader. It becomes out-of-date the moment it is issued, as new titles are constantly being added.
The original intention had been to provide a complete index and bibliography of all published work by Canadian native writers, in anthologies, journals, magazines and newspapers, as well as to provide annotations for the titles cited, but as this proved to be a formidable task, it was not possible to accomplish it in the time available. This holdings list is therefore limited to individual works of literature, and to anthologies or collections devoted to the work of native writers, as well as a listing of selected general historical and critical works.
The definition of what constitutes a "native writer" was not examined in any detail. Authors were included who consider themselves to be native writers, who are generally accepted by reviewers and critics to be native writers, or who are stated in biographical references, bibliographic listings and Internet sources as having native origins or associations. This may have resulted in the omission of some names that should have been included, or the inclusion of some names whose association is arguable. A few titles have been included with a primary American focus, but which do have some Canadian contributions or associations. This listing is a " work-in-progress" and hopefully it will be maintained, refined and kept up-to-date by others. Names are entered under the format used in the Leddy Library’s Public Catalogue, although "see references" are provided for traditional names, when available.
I would like to express my very great appreciation to Lou Ann Greenham for her assistance with this project.
