Johan
Friedrich Reitz (1695-1778)
The portrait of Johan Friedrich Reitz was
painted by J.M. Quinkhart in 1749,
and
hangs in the Senate chamber of the University of Utrecht in the
Netherlands
Having gained promotion there, his brother Wilhelm
Otto obtained his previous position. In 1724 he was caslled upon
to be Con-rector of the Latin or Hieronymian School in Utrecht.
In 1740 h was promoted to Rector, and in addition he was nominated as
rector in Amsterdam in 1745, although without leaving Utrecht, having
there been nominated as professor-extraordinary in Rhetoric and
Poetry. In 1747 he received a full professorship by appointment
of the Stadholder Francisa Willaim IV, withnthe chair of History and
Eloquentia.
He was appointed Rectort
Magnificus of Utrecht University for the first time in 1750, an
appointment that was renewed repeatedly afterwards. He became
Profesor Emeritus in 1769.
He published historical,
classical and grammatical works, as well as poetry.
He married
Theodora Kloeck on January 2, 1727. Her family had resided in
Arnhem for three generations, where her father was a country parson,
who had died when she was twelve years old. Johan Friedrich
and Theodora had eight children, of whom
one died in infancy. Their son, GYSBERT REITZ, was the
forefather of the South African Reitz family and of the Bosch Reitz
clan.
