The TC reading indicates the most probable number of colony forming units of total coliform per 100 mL sample of water.

The E. reading indicates the most probable number of colony forming units of E. coli per 100 mL sample of water.

The recorded number 2424 indicates that the total number of colonies is too high to be counted.

We no longer presume that any open bodies of water are free of bacteria, thus a zero reading on the test plates is recorded

as >3 (fewer than three) colonies.  In these cases there was no observable indication of E. coli.

Provincial standards regarding water that is safe for recreational use are as follows.   For total coliform, bacterial counts of 100 or fewer colony forming units per 100 mL of water, and for E. coli  10 or fewer colony forming units per 100 mL of water.  The goal set by The Township of the Archipelago is 10 units of total coliform and >3 units of E. coli.

The water quality data gathered last year has not yet been published, but the following data is from records retained by me after submitting the original work worksheet to be collated.  I expect that this work will be completed in time for all of our teams to use it at our spring workshop.  I am eager to see how the South Channel Area compares this year.  The South Cannel numbers in 2003 were much improved over those of the two previous years, but were poorer than those recorded in the course of the first two years of this testing/monitoring program.       Stan Topping
