Restricted Fire Zones Again in 2002???

The South Channel area found itself in a restricted fire zone over most of the cottage season in 2001, and long range weather forecasts suggest that we will experience fire restrictions again this summer and fall.  In spite of the abundant rain last fall and again this spring, the winter snow pack was skimpy and the usual reserve of ground water that is expected this time of year is also skimpy.

In some years when the fire threat has not been as pervasive as it was last year many cottagers and visitors would come into the area unaware that the MNR had declared a restricted fire zone.  At these times the MNR liberally posts signs along highways and in stores and gas stations.  Announcements are made on radio and TV, and ads are placed in the newspapers.  Parry Sound is located in zone 24 of the Eastern Fire Region.

Fire bans do have a significant impact on our life at the cottage, except if were to step in the bush.  There no open fire at all is allowed.  Propane BBQs do not come under the ban and a charcoal BBQ may be used if it is within 100 metres of a dwelling that you own or legally occupy.  Also it must be used at least 1 metre distant from any flammable material.  You cannot have a campfire or a fire in an outdoor fireplace, fire grate or fire pit.

The only exceptions to these restrictions are organized parks and campgrounds where the operator may allow, under very strict criteria, campfires and BBQs, but only during certain hours.  None of these areas are closely adjacent to the South Channel.
