RBAC Meeting (Recreational Boating Advisory Council)

Key points from the above meeting:

-         Canadian Hydrographic Services is interested in views about how the various charts for Georgian Bay might be improved.  If you have a comment, please let our Executive know.

-         There was discussion regarding mandatory wear of PFDs in all vessels under 19.5 feet at all times by all persons.  The US has mandatory wear for those 13 years of age and under in many states.

-         The Coast Guard has completed draft amendments to the Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft Regulations.  Included are:

-         The tests will be provided by the Coast Guard

-         The pass mark will increase from 75% to 80%

-         The number of questions will increase from 36 to 75

-         No more internet testing

-         No more exemption for short-term visitors to Canada (i.e. those living in the US) other than having a card with you that would satisfy the authorities in your home jurisdiction.

The idea is to make the test harder.  They also wish to have these changes in place for the 2003 boating season.

Reminder:  As of September 15, 2002 you must have with you an operator competency card when using a PWC or other vessel under 13 feet, or any vessel if you were born after April 1, 1983.  Cards will be mandatory for all, in any powered pleasure craft after September 15, 2009.
