Under Construction... Posted with Permission!

Dear Dr. Morton,

I was interested to read your comments about the exam. I thought that you had many valid points for us about how to improve the quality of one's study techniques.

I know that we are not supposed to give any credence to the threat to campus security on Monday, however, while I never considered staying away from the campus, I have to admit that I was slightly unnerved while walking to the exam in the morning. I was never afraid for my safety, but I was more aware of my surroundings and ambient noise.

As a person who refuses to allow those kinds of events to curtail my activities, I think that it is reasonable to say that my heightened vigilance was an unwanted distraction. I am sure many students would agree with me.

Just thought you could add that to your discussion of environmental distractions.

Thanks for a great class.

JN

You're right. That should be considered as an important environmental distraction.

Dr. Morton,

Just a comment on the exam I wrote today. I have no idea of the mark I received, though I am sure it was fine.

As I was leaving, it occurred to me that the hour and half spent writing it, was actually spent learning it, and committing some of the ideas to my long term memory. It was challenging and interesting, and a lot of work, but I believe that much of my learning took place during the actual exam, not during any "studying" I may have done. It was the first time that I found the open book strategy used to its true potential.

Also, just today I realized how helpful the group testing format was. My group required a defense and often a debate to decide on an answer, thus maximizing the learning once again. All year long, I just figured it was to make it easier. I wouldn't touch the format you have created, it is balanced, fair, and creative. (Although the statistics were a little unnerving. :)

Perhaps I will see you in grad school someday??

J. C.

I appreciate the comments, and your perception. I wish more students were as insightful!

Your comments leave me with the feeling that your students next year will be in good hands.
