Staining Small, often pleomorphic, coccoid to ellipsoidal organisms occurring intracytoplasmically, either singly or in compact inclusions (morulae) in circulating leukocytes of susceptible mammalian hosts. Vectors, when known, are ticks. Organisms may grow in tick vector. Non-motile. Not cultivable in cell-free media or chicken embryos. Some species cultivable in blood monocyte cultures. The etiological agents of diseases of dogs, cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and man. .
