Technique	OPTOCHIN INHIBITION ,(/,)/,(
Principle	Optochin or ethylhydrocuprein is used to distinguich S. pneumoniae from other alpha hemolytic streptococci.
Cautions
Method	Filter paper disks that have been soaked in optochin are placed on the inoculated plate near the streak line.
Results	The plate is incubated at 37 degrees C for 24 hours. A zone of inhibition of >5mm is considered positive.
Positive control	Usually, S. pneumoniae exhibit obvious zones of inhibition
