| Principle | Niacin (nicotinic acid) production is a characteristic feature of human tubercle bacilli and distinguishes them from bovine tubercle bacilli and other mycobacteria. Niacin is detected colorimetrically from an extract of the bacterial growth. | 
| Cautions | Cyanogen bromide which is used in this test is lachrymatory (ie is a tear gas) and is nephrotoxic. |
