Principle Niacin (nicotinic acid) production is a characteristic feature of human tubercle bacilli and distinguishes them from bovine tubercle bacilli and other mycobacteria. Niacin is detected colorimetrically from an extract of the bacterial growth.
Cautions Cyanogen bromide which is used in this test is lachrymatory (ie is a tear gas) and is nephrotoxic.
