Paul Ehrlich
Paul Ehrlich was born in Germany in 1854. *a remarkably original and stimulating scientist, Ehrlich made major contributions to many different areas of immunology and medicine. Thus he developed methods for standardizing antigens and antitoxins, he developed the first plausible (and correct) theory to explain the immune response by suggesting that cells had receptors or :side chains: that were shed as antibodies. He studied the hemolytic properties of blood and coined the term complement. He appears to be the first to have considered the problem of autoimmunity and self regulation. He developed the concept that the body would do everything possible to avoid an autoimmune response. : :Horror autotoxicus"
