Hans Muller-Eberhard

Hans Muller-Eberhard was born in Germany in 1927. Working in the United Stated, Dr. Muller-Eberhard was the first to systematically analyze the components of the complement system using modern biochemical techniques. In this way he worked out the detailed biochemistry of the complement activation process. Thus he was the first to isolate and define C3 and its breakdown products. He identified the enzymes that activated it including factor B. He identified the metastable binding site of C3b and demonstrated the initiating factors for the alternate complement pathway
