Angelo DiGeorge
Angelo DiGeorge was born in Philadelphia in 1921. An endocrinologist by training, Dr. DiGeorge encountered the anomaly that bears his name when investigating newborn infants wither hypoparathyroidism. Dr. DiGeorge also noted that some of these children also lacked a thymus. These children suffered from what is now called DiGeorge syndrome. Despite the absence of a thymus. Dr. DiGeorge noted that these children had normal lymphocyte numbers and immunoglobulin levels despite defective cell mediated responses. This was one of the key observations that led to the concept of a dual immune system involving both B and T Cells.
