Cólera y cultura nacional: panfletos populares en la Costa Rica de los ’90

Modern epidemics often reveal important characteristics and changes in national culture. Popular hygiene pamphlets distributed in Costa Rica during the campaigns against cholera in the early 1990s, mostly by state actors, revealed conflicts over responsibility for health in a neo-liberal moment, as well as new currents in nationalist discourse that targeted Nicaraguan migrant labourers as potential vectors of cholera while also surreptitiously identifying them as new members of the national community.
