Message From the President
I write to inform CALACS members that Elizabeth Montes Garcés has had to step down as president of the association for health reasons (for a copy of her letter of resignation, click here). As the elected vice-president, the responsibility for filling her role fell to me, and I would like to take this opportunity to reassure members that I will do my best to live up to her record of service and equal her commitment. I want in particular to thank Professor Montes Garcés for her dedication to making the association a more efficient and dynamic organization over the period that she performed her duties as president, as well as the terms she served on the board and as organizer of two very successful CALACS congresses. We wish her a continued amelioration of her health and all the best. Following Elizabeth's inspiration I will continue working with the Board of Directors towards the renewal and growth of the association.
Board members have been engaged in a series of important activities in the past couple of months. In October I facilitated a workshop exercise with board members to rethink CALACS' vision, mission, and partnerships, and to brainstorm strategies to ensure a bright future for the association.
I am happy to report that we have begun a drive for membership renewal as well as an exercise to identify potential new members and we encourage you all to support this process. The next issue of the CJLACS is coming out within the next couple of weeks, and another will follow shortly afterwards as we complete the search for a new editorial team.
Finally, I want to renew the invitation to members to get involved and send proposals to host the association's next congress, to be held in Fall 2011 or Spring 2012.
In the coming year the association will continue to actively support its members by providing them with a forum for exchanging research findings and networking. We have taken the first steps to ensure that the association remains dynamic and grows stronger as it reaches out to a wider audience.
I welcome your feedback and suggestions and look forward to working with you.
Warmest regards,
Maria del Carmen Suescun PozasPresident

Next CALACS Congress – Call for Proposals
The Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS) invites proposals from prospective hosts for its next congress, to be held in Fall 2011 or Spring 2012.
Organizers are encouraged to propose a focused theme. At the same time, they should consider that CALACS conference programs are generally designed to welcome participation from a broad spectrum of its interdisciplinary membership among professional researchers, graduate students and research-oriented activists and members of NGOs.
CALACS welcomes proposals for meetings that would be held in conjunction with universities, colleges and other associations. CALACS is a member of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Local Organizing Committee could consider holding the CALACS congress in conjunction with the Federation.
CALACS can usually offer hosts limited funds to assist with conference budget, administrative assistance to co-ordinate the event with association membership lists, forms in multiple languages to expedite the making of proposal and registration materials, and contact information to assist applications to potential conference granting agencies. Local Organizing Committees will have control over the program but CALACS generally oversees the process of awarding travel grants to presenters and graduate students.
