2000 University of Windsor Lancers Coaching Staff
MIKE HAVEY (Head Coach)
Mike Havey Mike Havey has been the head coach of the University of Windsor Lancers since 1990. An accomplished coach at the amateur and collegiate level, Havey has laid the foundation for a program that will lead the Lancers to an OUA and CIAU Championship.

A native of Arnprior, Ontario, Havey played university basketball for Ottawa. He spent 4 seasons with the Gee-Gees from 1978 to 1981 and captained the club in his final year. Upon graduation, Havey joined the Gee-Gees coaching staff as an assistant to John Restivo.

In 1985 Havey packed up and moved out west to Medicine Hat, Alberta, where he was named Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach at Medicine Hat College. Havey guided "The Hat" to 2 conference final appearances in his 6 seasons. He was twice honoured as the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference coach of the year (1998, 1990) as well as capturing the 1990 3M Canada Coaching Excellence Award as the top hoops coach in Canada.

Havey’s love for basketball is demonstrated by his commitment to improving the skills of both aspiring ball players and coaches across the country. A Level 3 Coach, Mike has been a regional coach in the Player Development Programs of both Basketball Ontario and the Alberta Basketball Association as well as being the past President & Vice President of the National Association of Basketball Coaches of Canada. He is the lead instructor for National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level 1 and 2 courses in Southwestern Ontario.

Each year, Coach Havey is an invited clinician at basketball camps in four provinces (Ontario, Quebec, Alberta & New Brunswick), as well as begin the current headline basketball instructor at Olympia Sports Camp, Canada’s largest residential camp. Havey also finds time to lead the Lancer summer basketball clinic with women’s team coach Georgia Risnita.

As a coach, Mike Havey is a solid teacher who understands both the game and the people involved. As a former student he knows that there is a balance to be struck between sports and academics.

"Every member of our team believes that participation in basketball is an important, but not the most important aspect of their life. I like to tell our players that I expect basketball to be the third highest priority in their life while they are with us. In order, I expect that their top three priorities will be:

  • Faith & Family
  • Education
  • Lancer Basketball

"It is pretty clear that juggling these priorities successfully requires organization, discipline and self-management skills in addition to commitment. It is the living of this daily challenge that I believe best prepares our athletes for the life challenges that each will face following graduation.

"I believe that the success in team sports requires commitment to self improvement, balanced with a commitment to self sacrifice for the sake of the team. In team sport the superlative performance of a single athlete seldom overcomes the united performance of a group of prepared, committed and intelligent athletes.

‘I believe that commitment will help athletes deal with the inevitable disappointments of participation in a team sport setting. Too many of today's athletes in sport want too much…too soon.

"Our team operates as a "meritocracy"…meaning that players will receive what they deserve, what they earn, and that which best allows the team to achieve success. In some cases this means that an individual athlete may have to accept less than he immediately wants. To succeed as a team sport athlete one must be prepared to give to get.

"I am looking for committed athletes. Those special athletes who are willing to practice and play daily with big effort and who are committed to improvement. To succeed at this level an athlete must be prepared to train year round to develop himself physically, mentally, technically and tactically. This level of commitment requires sacrifice and a reordering of personal priorities. That’s how you become a hero."

VINCE LANDRY (ASSISTANT COACH)
Mike is joined on the sideline by former Lancer standout Vince Landry. This is Landry’s second coaching stint with the Lancers, his first being under legendary coach Nick Grabowski in 1981-82.

Vince is a respected and intense basketball coach who does not accept anything less than a player’s best effort. He was a member of Windsor’s 1979 OUAA championship team and was a three time OUAA All Star (1977-79).

Like Mike Havey, Vince’s involvement with basketball extends beyond the Lancers. For the past several years, Landry has assisted with Windsor’s highly successful Riverside Falcons clubs basketball team. Under his guidance, the Falcons won back-to-back Basketball Ontario midget club championships.
